I think the Microchip PIC forum is the exception that proves the rule.
Otherwise, web forums without an email component almost always wither
and die.

Mail lists that also include a web component such as PIClist seem to
work pretty well.  Indeed, last time I looked the PIClist web component
was pretty horrible, but that has to be one of the most long-lived
forums ever, and it is still very active. It got off to a slow start in
1994 and still averages over 30 posts per day. Although Yahoo groups
provide a simple way to combine web and email, their success seems
pretty mixed.  Some work pretty well, but I bet there are hundreds of
Yahoo groups that haven't seen a post in a year.
