Thanks for the reassurance, but there must be some way of expressing
what I want that does not result in a warning. I hardly ever use bit
variables, but is there some way that I could use one in all cases even
if the register I'm trying to manipulate is not at a
bit-addressable-location?

Regarding the non-zero exit code, is that a result of the warnings?
