   Be careful here...Every PIC datasheet I've seen (for PICs with on- 
chip ADCs) specify that Vref not be taken much higher than Vdd, like  
Vdd+0.3V or so.

   You could use a resistive voltage divider or a simple op-amp  
circuit to scale the 0-12V range to 0-5V.
