The facts as I know them are: - C compiler writing is a full time job. - SDCC is a great compiler for a compiler written by people who do not write it as a full time job. - The difference wrt. a commercial compiler (written by full time jobbers) shows. Mostly as code size but not only. - In despite of this, SDCC is one of the best C compilers for embedded, and one of the very few which are free and open sourced.
