Summary: Misinterpretation of unicode LEFT-TO-RIGHT MARK (200e) in screen 5 Group: GNU Screen Submitter: mml Submitted: Mon 03 Feb 2025 06:19:32 PM UTC Category: User Interface Severity: 3 - Normal Priority: 5 - Normal Status: None Privacy: Public Assigned to: None Open/Closed: Open Discussion Lock: Any Release: 5.0.0 Fixed Release: None Planned Release: None Work Required: None _______________________________________________________ Follow-up Comments: ------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon 03 Feb 2025 06:19:32 PM UTC By: Matt Liggett <mml> I admit I don't know exactly how LEFT-TO-RIGHT MARK should be interpreted. I only know I have a program which emits it (https://dianne.skoll.ca/projects/remind/) and that it works invisibly with urxvt, xterm and tmux, and I believe it previously worked fine with screen 4, but with screen 5 I observe this behavior (simplified test case) % perl -e 'binmode STDOUT, ":utf8"; print "$_\x{200e}\n" for ("", "b", "ba", "baz", "baz ")' ◆ b▒ ba␉ baz In case there are encoding issues with the pasted text, here is hexdump output of me using the X clipboard to cut/paste the issue into a file. If needed, I can produce a screenshot. % xxd -g1 baz.txt 00000000: 25 20 70 65 72 6c 20 2d 65 20 27 62 69 6e 6d 6f % perl -e 'binmo 00000010: 64 65 20 53 54 44 4f 55 54 2c 20 22 3a 75 74 66 de STDOUT, ":utf 00000020: 38 22 3b 20 70 72 69 6e 74 20 22 24 5f 5c 78 7b 8"; print "$_\x{ 00000030: 32 30 30 65 7d 5c 6e 22 20 66 6f 72 20 28 22 22 200e}\n" for ("" 00000040: 2c 20 22 62 22 2c 20 22 62 61 22 2c 20 22 62 61 , "b", "ba", "ba 00000050: 7a 22 2c 20 22 62 61 7a 22 29 27 0a 20 20 0a e2 z", "baz")'. .. 00000060: 97 86 0a 62 e2 96 92 0a 62 61 e2 90 89 0a 62 61 ...b....ba....ba 00000070: 7a 20 0a z . _______________________________________________________ Reply to this item at: <https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?66749> _______________________________________________ Message sent via Savannah https://savannah.gnu.org/
