Looking at the old code you linked, it looks confusing (nested switches?) and
I don't understand why it didn't just use strftime instead - maybe it was to
support some legacy systems I'm unaware of or something.

Or maybe we just invent a new escape that sends a whole chunk to strftime. ie
"percent-paren" %(%x - %I:%M%p) - where being inside the parens makes it
strftime escapes instead of hardstatus escapes.

The little clock deserves a proper rewrite with a helper function or
something, I would not necessarily just revert the old commit.  Just my
opinion though.
