I have finally found the cause - Slackware 14.2 uses glibc 2.23, which doesn't have support for unicode 9.0. The wcwidth of the particular characters are reported as '1', whereas in unicode 9.0 '2' is reported. The testing branch of Slackware has glibc 2.27, so I guess I'll have to keep screen reverse-patched until that is released.
