Follow-up Comment #1, bug #51100 (project screen):

Well, if you parse every string of digits (i.e. everything except the dots) as
often done with version numbers which have more than one dot, 4.05.01 and
4.5.1 are the same version number, just two different representations (with
and without leading zeros for minor and micro version).

It though indeed might be occassionally confusing or even misleading if one
representation is used on the website, the tar ball and in the documentation
and another one inside the program.
