./configure CFLAGS="-ggdb -DDEBUG"
Compile and put "debug on" in screenrc.

Screen spits out debug messages to /tmp/debug ( see screen.h ).
Attaching a debugger might be helpful.

I could see some "debug" settings in /src/configure file but not sure how to 
use it. (if thats the right place to look at)
