It could be considered an 'administrative' command, like Create/Delete File, not necessary for the interoperability of the cards. I think a more important function is the list of the applications present on the smart card. This is standardized as TLV-coded list in a particular file under MF. I would like to know how I can retrieve information about what files(EF) and/or directories(DF) exist on an ISO 7816-4 smartcard (I'm working with the OCF standard). Is it, for instance, possible to list files in a directory (DF)? According to what I have read that's not possible. I know that you should be able to find out about the files on a card by analyzing the hex string return by a SELECT FILE command but I don't know how to interpret that hexstring. I've read through the ISO 7816-4 document found on http://www.fh-augsburg.de/~bossekr/iso7816_4.html but not found the solution of my problem.
