Follow-up Comment #3, task #15646 (project administration): A work only lands in public domain after the end of its copyright term; people also may disclaim copyright for their work, and then it is effectively public domain; but when the copyright holder dissolves without explicitly assigning copyright to anybody, the work remains proprietary (in any case, a program can't be free until its source code is available).
