Hi Bob,
indeed we want the want the latter solution, that is, short commit mails to
auctex-commit and full diffs to auctex-diffs, so two post-receive-email hook
scripts are needed with different values of hooks.mailinglist and
hooks.showrev as you've said.
That's how it has been since forever, and we have user requests that want to
keep that split. (It seems that auctex-commit is mostly tracked by users just
interested in new features/fixes while auctex-diffs is mostly tracked by
packagers.)
