Here's what comes to mind:

1) having an independent record of the commits seems like it can only help in
the event of repository corruption, etc.

2) for some of us, perusing mailing list archives is much easier, faster, and
more familiar than anything having to do with git.

3) mailing list archives are vc-agnostic.  It is not uncommon for projects to
switch vcs as years (and maintainers) go by ...
