No, you don't: .symlinks files are something very obscure and just a dirty workaround for CVS' inability to deal with real symlinks. It is entirely natural to forget, or not to know in the first place, about their existence and semantics. False alarms like this one are a "feature" of the .symlinks dirt-hack-around-and-mostly-nefarious implementation. It works, though. JFTR, I believe there are maximum 4 or 5 webmasters from the whole www crowd who understand how to deal with .symlinks files properly, and they have to do it more frequently than any other GNU maintainer. So no reason to feel guilty here, AFAICT.
