The documentation says: "Exports and tagging (tags and branches) are not supported at this stage." http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-cvsserver.html Your best option is to submit a patch to the Git developers and have it included in their next release (they make new releases often). We follow the Git evolution by using the binary packages uploaded at backports.org, which are fairly recent (currently 1.5.4.2).
