The other day you mentioned you'd like to get rsync v3 at Savannah.

Since then, a Debian backport was made and uploaded at backports.org.
I installed it at Savannah (but not in vservers), and noticed that the
Big Backup Rsync has a lower RAM peak indeed (around 1.5GB -> 1GB, to
500MB less).

You can check this at
http://savannah.gnu.org:8080/cacti/graph_view.php in the memory usage
graph (if you use an interval of "last week").

Do you remember where you needed it?
(I think it was in the download area?)
With the backport, we can install it with little maintenance.
