I have been told by several authoritative voices that the problem was a too old libsane. I attempted to correct this with a download of a more up-to-date libsane, with the results as above. Thanks for your message, and suggestions. I hope for more, as I'd really like to be able to scan. So far, the actual Canon MF4770n seems like a very well-built piece of equipment. As mentioned, it prints fine, and it also copies well; of course the copying is done by pressing buttons on the Canon and doesn't involve my computer at all. TIA for further help and suggestions.
