backend version 1.0.24 (Debian Jessie) I'll I needed to do was add "usb 0x04b8 0x0151" to the epson2 backend configuration.
Successfully scaned at 300, 600, 3200, 4800, and 6400dpi, with both 8 and 16 bit depths. The button works. It shows up as Epson GT-X980.
