Second: do you have the option "button controlled scan" in the standard option menu ticked? Button controlled scanning does not give you much in Xsane. Instead of scanning immediately, it will delay the scan 'till the button is pushed (the color or B&W, I forgot which one, try it, the other button will cancel the scan).
