After a bit of source code reading I discovered that xsane applies this in a post processing step. Only when switching to gray scale it supports native brightness and contrast contol in the device just as scanimage does. All is back to normal. Now that I know what to look for this is trivial to find on Google. I was following a trangent with this "inactive" setting that is a bit confusing. Sorry for the noise. Tobias
