Amazing thing is that I finally got it working last night, not sure why. I started playing with an HP 8590 so I uninstalled all the sane stuff and reinstalled. After this, I hooked the Epson back up and it seems to work fine. I didn't even have to put the firmware file in this time.

"Epson Scanner2" ? unested, added in SANE-backends-1.0.16-CVS The Epson Perfection 3590 seems to work for me with no firmware and the same 0x04b8, 0x0122 as the 3490 but did not require the firmware.
