Usable USB support in the 2.2. kernel is from 2.2.18. You have to load USB scanner module scanner.o and make a dev mknod usbscanner c 180 48 I am running Agfa Snapscan E26 USB on RedHat 6.0 with sane 1.0.7 without problems.
