Yes it can :) The Nikon Coolscan LS-40 is not supported by SANE 1.0.7 which is probably what SUSE 8 have. If you want the support for it, you'll have to get SANE from the cvs development tree (http://www.student.uit.no/~pere/linux/sane/cvs-server.html), or wait for SANE 1.0.8 which is due by the end of may.
