Hi, Walter. Thanks for pointing this out. In the past several people reported a similar problem, but I never knew that it was because of a missing "-lcrypto" linkage. This "shouldn't" be necessary, because libptal already has this linkage, but perhaps the order is wrong for certain situations between "-lcrypto" and "-lsnmp'.
In any case, try upgrading to the recently released hpoj-0.90 (see http://hpoj.sourceforge.net), which now has its own SANE backend that is better suited to HP multi-function peripherals.
