I temporarily changed the hpoj backend back to the way that was causing xsane to choke (geometry options as SANE_TYPE_INT rather than the usual SANE_TYPE_FIXED, then change xsane to Copy or Fax mode). The problem no longer occurs with xsane-0.87. Thanks for addressing this issue.
