Hi, the first version (1.0.1) of the test backend is finished and can be downloaded at http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/test-backend/ .
It's in a very early stage so don't expect too much. Scanning is possible but not much more. The idea is to supersede the pnm backend as a hardware-independent test backend without the problems of the pnm backend.
