Grrr. It seems that the expansion is normally done by make, not
sh. Your "eval" way of doing things is good, it can even be repeated
like
echo `eval eval eval echo ${libdir}`
to get deeper levels of expansion.
LISP and Scheme would be so simple for something like this...
