I just finished installed RH 8.0, connected my scanner, edited two files and had my scanner working. I commented out all backends in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf besides the EPSON backend. You can accomplish the same by just leaving one line containing "epson" in this file. Then I uncommented the last line in /etc/sane.d/epson.conf (the one containing usb /dev/usb/scanner0). Once I did this, I was able to run scanimage.
