1.0.4 is an old version. However, I don't think anything has been changed in the tamarack code since then. Which kernel version? With newer kernels it's not necessary to recompile, buffer size can be changed at runtime. Check the man page "sane-scsi": http://www.mostang.com/sane/man/sane-scsi.5.html .
