You could check the disk space availability and alarm when there is less than a 
specified threshold. There's also a SMTP2POP3 add-on available 
(http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/addons.php), though if the exchange servers are 
clustered it wouldn't be of much use.

does Salive have any sort of check that would execute the commands for sending 
email and bark if an unexpected result came about?

we had an issue where one of our 2 exchange boxes ran low on space and would 
give 452 4.3.1 Insufficient system resources (in reply to MAIL FROM command))

the smtp check appears to just check for the initial connect, which still 
worked fine.  looking to see if there is a more in depth check that would help 
us with this if it ever happened again.
