Hmm good point, one of my APs which is still a router is running the   WW-DRT 
software.. it' s basically a Linux based firmware with a ton of information 
that could be checked.  http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index   newer Buffalo 
routers are using the software as their factory firmware now.

If the AP is SSH enabled you could try to see if the SSH server on it is 
running.
Or if it has a webserver you could login to the admin page of the AP too...

The only thing I have SA doing is pinging the device to make sure it's up and 
running...  I guess you would need a wireless NIC in the SA box to verify the 
SSID is broadcasting, available, proper encryption key, etc.. otherwise I don't 
think there is much you can do to monitor an AP.
