you must log into the console session.

I was able to set the SA service to automatic and start it correctly. I
won’t know whether it’s working or not until something fails. I
don’t quite understand how to access and modify it via RDP. Who am I
logging in as via RDP to modify the SA program? When I log on locally I
don’t see the SA task running until I try to start the SA program. When
I attempt to start the SA program I get an access denied message and then the
SA program is available in the task tray but it’s not started. I’m
assuming I don’t want to start it since it’s already running as a
service, but I should be able to make changes and then restart the service,
right?

Close SA (make surre tray icon gone)

Open services and change the server alive service to "automatic" and start the
service.

You have to access the console desktop NOT a standard RDP session. This means
that if you want to modify SA remotely you must do one of the 2 following
1) use vnc or similair technology
2) use rdp but you MUST USE THE PROPER SWITCHES
    A) older rdp session start from command line with "mstsc -admin"
    B) newer rdp session start from command line with "mstsc /console"

Yes, you can run it as a service. I don’t know how to set it up off-hand
