Dirk, I can't answer on other services at this point - just these couple that I've had issues with. Installing the 2247 build seems to have resolved the issues at this point. Hopefully it will still work during a real problem (in the middle of the night instead). Mike

From: Servers Alive Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Smith, Michael Sent: Sunday, June 15, 2008 2:51 PM To: Servers Alive Discussion List Subject: RE: [SA-list] ServersAlive Hanging on Service Restart Process Dirk, I just had confirmation (the hard way) that this does not apply to just restarting the SA service. I have a check on our SurfControl eMail filter system that monitors the 'Rules Service' process. If that process stops functioning, SA restart the service. This check and service restart process has worked perfectly for the last couple of years on earlier versions of SA, but now that I've upgraded to 6.1 this is the second time (wasn't 100% about the first time, but this confirms it) that SA has stopped while restarting this service. The last SA log entry at 4:36am shows that it was attempting to restart the service. When I connected to the SA server it showed the same symptoms as I've previously described (shows 'Checking' in the status bar, but stuck there). Clicked [Stop] and then [Start] to get it moving again. The Event log on the SurfControl server shows that the Rules service was stopped at 4:37am, but the service was never restarted. At that point our mailed stopped flowing and all the alarms broke loose. In the past we've relied on ServersAlive to catch problems like these and resolve them automatically for us - which up until the recent upgrade it's done very well. Other than the upgrade to 6.1 there have been no changes at all to the SA server or to the SurfControl server. The alert is set to stop first and then restart. Maybe the issue is the remote machine? This is a backup ServersAlive process checking the status of our Primary ServersAlive machine (also 6.1.2204). It's trying to stop and restart the SALIVE service, so maybe the actual problem is that the remote SAlive service is taking longer than expected to stop? As a work-around for now, I created a scheduled task item on the primary ServersAlive machine that issues a NET START SALIVE command every hour. This way if the backup machine tries to restart the service and only gets to the point of stopping it, the scheduled task will eventually restart the service. Unfortunately, the backup machine that monitors the primary machine will still be hung and require manual intervention to fix. Is the alert set to STOP first and then start? (from a code point of view the service alert is exactly the same in v6 as it's in v6.1) Dirk Bulinckx. From: Servers Alive Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Smith, Michael Sent: Sunday, June 08, 2008 3:41 AM To: Servers Alive Discussion List Subject: [SA-list] ServersAlive Hanging on Service Restart Process I recently upgraded to 6.1.2204 and have run into some problems. I've noticed that some of my checks that attempt to restart a Service if it detects the service is non-functional are not working properly. When ServersAlive tries to restart the service on the remote machine, it hangs. Strangely, the service on the remote machine does Stop however ServersAlive doesn't Restart it. The Status bar indicates that it is still Checking the entry, but it's just stopped there. The last check was at 8:37pm even though the cycle is set for every 5 minutes. The security is clearly correct because it's able to stop the service on the remote box, just not restart it. Once this happens I've tried manually stopping the ServersAlive service to get it moving, but the ServersAlive Service itself will not stop properly. The Services manager shows the status as "Stopping". I then have no choice but to reboot the server running ServersAlive. The last entry in the log file is: Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:33:29 PM Check cycle starts ( 29- 5) Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:33:29 PM KT-HRIS1 Service Activity Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:33:29 PM External COM check started (C00000003,2,-1) Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:33:29 PM External COM check (C00000003,2): Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:33:29 PM EXTERNALCOM took 102 ms(2) Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:33:29 PM INFO: alerting COMD Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:33:29 PM vbStopService salive: 1 Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:33:29 PM GetServiceStat I am positive that this used to work prior to the upgrade to 6.1.
