First of all, this is caused by an acute lack of state funds. Overcoming the consequences of the 2008 financial crisis cost America a lot so much that now there is practically no money left for many government programs. The White House has already had to cut back several times but this hardly helped, and the budget deficit is constantly growing. The situation has gone so far that there is practically no money left to pay government salaries! The US government hasn’t shut down only because of a special short term agreement between the White House and Congress for additional financing for it. Speaking at the White House last Wednesday, President Obama tried to explain why he thinks the amount of the national debt must be increased. Although as a Senator, he criticized and opposed such a move by George W. Bush. If Congress refuses to increase the national debt, the US may default on its obligations. This means that the US government would not be able to repay its debts. The US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warns that this scenario may lead to a new global financial crisis. The US congress has hardly any option than to increase the debt limit from USD 14.3 trillion to avoid the crisis. Republicans & President Obama have two different proposals to cut down the debt in next 10-12 years. The issues can be debated and a compromise is made in the near future, but US congress must act to avoid the US sovereign default. It will otherwise result into another global financial crisis; the bonds market will go for a toss.
