I spoke to soon. :-)  My solution makes the Ubuntu Jupyter work OK  but  
```sage -n``` does not work.  For SageMath's jupyter I needed to make the 
same change in ```$SAGE_ROOT/local/etc/jupyter/jupyter_notebook_config.py```
