Because you need

cd /usr

and not

cd usr

But this is not relevant.

it seems that you have a system-wide installation of Sage on your
machine, which has nothing to do with
the one that is supposed to be in the tarfile.

Anyhow, what is the output of

find / -name sage | grep sage
