Did you try to type cot(pi*x) after the Sage prompt? The result is indeed cot(pi*x) as a symbolic expression. It can be evaluated by inserting special values for x (which is a pre-defined symbolic variable). A nice possibility (assuming that you do want to create a symbolic function based on cotangent function) is this: sage: f(x) = cot(pi*x) sage: f x |--> cot(pi*x) sage: f(3) Infinity sage: f(3/2) 0 sage: f(3/4) -1 Hope that I understood and answered your question.
