WorksForMe(TM). No crap... Isn-'t your teminal emilation the problem ?

   - What do you get when using another terminal emulation ? Or a (raw) 
   console ?
   - What happens when you try to use (say) emacs in your terminal emulator 
   (MATE termina, IIUC) ?
