That is extremely cool! Indeed dsolve(diff( y(x),x,x)+y(x)) solves the 
equation. It doesn't provide "steps" either, though, so it doesn't really 
help for the original query (whatever "steps" are for solving a linear ODE 
with constant coefficients)
