I don't really know either, as I said.  What I do know is that at AIMS they 
have an Ubuntu image for each user in their lab (which they can log into 
from any computer), and on our campus we have a Mac image that is then 
cloned for each computer in the lab (again, which anyone can log in to 
(without Sage, though)).  So presumably this is something fairly standard, 
which might solve some of your woes.  Or maybe this is exactly what you are 
doing and I misunderstood!
