I have never once ever heard of anybody seeing this problem, in "7 years of sagenb", so it's probably not some obvious thing. On my OS X 10.9 mac, if I'm not using https://cloud.sagemath.com, I use the notebook (and SMC for dev) via an Ubuntu Virtual Machine running under VirtualBox, which works extremely well for development and everything else.
