Thanks for the reply.  Indeed, using oracle's java plugin worked.  OTOH, 
most linux distributions seem to be using icedtea by default.  Since the 
package managers cannot deal with Oracle's java, the user has the 
responsibility of keeping it up to date, opening the door for security 
vulnerabilities, as the user might not follow the security updates from 
Oracle very closely.  I did install it, as I need Sage, but feel very 
conflicted about it...

(I know this has nothing to do with Sage.  Sorry for sidetracking for a 
moment.)
