thaks for this Dima. Problem solved by force-quitting sage, and restarting Firefox. Javascript was enabled, but I suspect the problem was two simultaneous sage sessions, 5.0.1 and 5.1, which is definitely Bad Weirdness.
Still, the syndrome seems to be experienced by a non-vanishing number of users, so it might be good to document it somewhere.
