I fear that the problem was my fault. I inadvertently started a non-terminating loop and after I realized this, but before I could do anything about it, my internet connection went down. I presumed that the session would time out but it looks like this isn't the case.
Sorry about that. It's (my) incompetence, not evil, that's causing the problems.
