It works here on "vanilla" sage-4.8, sage-4.8+new flask notebook+new jmol, 
and sage-5.0beta2+new flask notebook+new jmol with both opera-11.61 and 
firefox-10.0.2 on Gentoo 64 bit. java is the 64bit variety from sun, 
version 1.6.0.31.

As far as I remember, 3D never crashed my browsers and I have used 
sage-4.7, 4.7.2, aside the versions I mentioned above that I currently have.

Perhaps you have two different java (or some other) plugins installed and 
something is going wrong with the plugin interactions?
