Can you give a web link to an explanation of a toy example?  The
Wikipedia article was less than helpful (and indeed is marked for
cleanup), and other resources I found were better, but didn't quite
explain a precise mathematical definition.

Certainly it looks like it could be a matter of plotting an implicit
plot of the zeros of the function in the complex plane, and adding
special points at these open and closed points; there is no reason it
couldn't be done, and added as a module if people liked it.
