Let me tell you, I was in exactly the same spot about three years ago (SAGE-2.10.4: March 17, 2008), when I made my first contribution. You can do it too. Even if it doesn't apply, just letting us know that (and whatever errors you get) on the Trac ticket is a good thing, so that the next person to work on it knows that much more.
