Dave, I think the key point is that there are clearly companies and organizations that use python for engineering. Using Sage as a student gives you exposure to python. I'm sure its technically possible to use python within mathematica, but its not something you'd naturally do. So I do think that is an important advantage to Sage when choosing a system for education.
