I think you will have a problem if you build Sage with gcc 4.5.0 on Solaris, though I am working on a fix. Any version in the range 4.0.1 to 4.4.4 should work. We have done most development with the gcc 4.4 series. If you do need to build a new gcc, I would go for gcc 4.4.4
