I think it's always nice to improve our LaTeX support, but I don't quite
see how this is only for educational purposes. It seems like many people
would want to nicely typeset a determinant calculation that is not
intended for use in a typical classroom or educational situation. So,
I'm glad to see these functions be included somewhere, but I'm not clear
on the educational part.
